เขาว่า “เริ่มต้นดีมีชัยไปกว่าครึ่ง” การทำความเข้าใจ Topic ของ Essay ก็เช่นกัน มันอาจจะเป็นขั้นตอนแรก และเป็นขั้นตอนสำคัญที่สุดของ Writing Essay เลยทีเดียว
โดยส่วนใหญ่ Topic ของข้อสอบ Writing ใน TOEFL/IELTS เป็นขอบข่ายเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับ Government, Sociology, Technology, Employment, Environment, Education, Family, Gender, Language, Culture ฯลฯ ดังนั้น เราต้องพยายามฝึกเขียน Essay รวมถึงหาอ่าน Article เกี่ยวกับ Issue ดังกล่าวเยอะๆ
Structure of Question
สิ่งสำคัญที่สุดคือ การอ่านคำถามให้ละเอียดและตอบคำถามให้ครบ โดยคำถามของข้อสอบ Writing ใน TOEFL/IELTS มักจะมี 3 ส่วน ได้แก่ background information, problem, และ task
The first car appeared on British roads in 1888. By the year 2000 there may be as many as 29 million vehicles on British roads. Alternative forms of transport should be encouraged and international laws introduced to control car use and ownership. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
- The background information
บางคนกลัวเสียเวลา อยากข้ามไปมุ่งโฟกัสแต่ task เลย ซึ่งเป็นวิธีการที่พัง จริงๆ แล้ว เราไม่ควรมองข้าม background information เลย เพราะมันอาจเป็น source สำคัญในการหา idea และ vocabulary อีกทั้งเรายังต้องใช้มันมาเขียนใน Introduction paragraph ด้วย (จากตัวอย่างด้านบน คือสีน้ำเงิน) - The problem
เป็นประโยคที่เกริ่นคำถามและบ่ง specific problem (จากตัวอย่างด้านบน คือสีเขียว) - The task
คือส่วนสำคัญที่จะบอกว่าเราต้องตอบคำถามใน essay แบบไหน (commenting, comparing หรือ arguing) สำคัญมากๆ ว่าต้องแยกให้ออก เพื่อเป็นตัวช่วยในการตอบคำถามและวาง essay structure โดยรูปแบบของ task ที่พบบ่อยๆ อาจแบ่งเป็น 3 ประเภท ได้แก่ discussion, proposal, และ argument (จากตัวอย่างด้านบน คือสีแดง)
Types of Task
1. The discussion
Task ประเภทนี้ มักถามว่าเรามีความคิดเห็นอย่างไรกับ cause นั้นๆ และ/หรือเรามี solution อะไรบ้างที่จะแนะนำ ถ้าเขาถามทั้งสองอย่าง หน้าที่เราก็ต้องตอบให้ครบ ถ้าขาดอันใดอันหนึ่งไป คะแนนจะหายไปมหันต์เลยทีเดียว แต่ถ้าโจทย์ถามแค่ความคิดเห็นต่อ cause แล้วไม่ได้บอกให้เราเสนอแนะ solution ก็ไม่จำเป็นต้องเขียน solution เพราะโจทย์ไม่ได้ถาม
โดยส่วนตัวคิดว่า essay ประเภทนี้เขียนง่ายที่สุด ขอแค่ตอบคำถามให้ครบก็ใช้ได้แล้ว
– In many countries schools have severe problems with student behaviour. What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest?
– Many universities charge higher fees for foreign students. Why do they do this? Do you believe that it is fair?
– “Telecommuting” refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades. How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?
2. The proposal
Task ประเภทนี้ คำถามจะค่อนข้างยาวและอาจเข้าใจยากกว่าประเภทอื่นๆ เราจึงต้องอ่านอย่างถี่ถ้วนที่สุดและขีดเส้นใต้/วงกลมคำที่เป็นคีย์เวิร์ดเอาไว้กันเหนียว Task ประเภทนี้ มักถามเราว่าเราเห็นด้วยหรือไม่เห็นด้วย อย่างไร กับ opinion statement นั้นๆ (ส่วนใหญ่เขาจะใช้คำว่า “To what extent do you agree or disagree?” จบท้ายคำถามประเภทนี้)
และความยากอีกอย่างของ essay ประเภทนี้คือ เวลาตอบ เราจะตอบแค่มุมมองของเราด้านเดียวไม่ได้ เราต้องมองโลกสองด้าน เราต้อง discuss ทั้งสองมุม แล้วจบด้วย conclusion ของเราว่า สรุป proposal นี้ มันเป็นไอเดียที่ดีหรือไม่ดี
– Fatherhood ought to be emphasized as much as motherhood. The idea that women are solely responsible for deciding whether or not to have babies leads on to the idea that they are also responsible for bringing the children up. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
– Currently there is a trend towards the use of alternative forms of medicine. However, at best these methods are ineffective, and at worst they may be dangerous. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
– Improvement in health, education and trade are essential for the development of poorer nations. However, the government of richer nations should take more responsibility for helping the poorer nations in such areas. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
3. The argument
Task นี้ โดยทั่วไปเราจะถูกสั่งให้เลือกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง คือต้องเลือกว่า solution/opinion อันไหนดีกว่ากันระหว่างสองอันนั้น หรืออีกแบบคือ เขาเลือกมาให้แล้ว แต่เราต้อง discuss ข้อดีและข้อเสีย (advantages and disadvantages) ของ solution นั้นๆ
ความยากของ essay ประเภทนี้อาจเป็นเรื่องการวาง essay structure ที่ค่อนข้างซับซ้อนหน่อย แต่ถ้าฝึกคิดฝึกเขียนบ่อยๆ ก็ไม่น่ามีปัญหา
– Television has had a significant influence on the culture of many societies. To what extent would you say that television has positively or negatively affected the cultural development of your society?
– Unemployment is one of the most serious problems facing developed nations today. What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of reducing the working week to thirty five hours?
– In many countries, children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong, while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibilities. Discuss both views.
– Some people believe that the media, such as the press, TV and Internet should be more strictly controlled. Others feel that controls should be loosened to give people freer access to information. Which opinion do you agree with?
– Some people argue that universities should provide students with more practical training for their future career. Should university education be more vocational or academic. Discuss.
สรุปวิธีการเช็คว่าเป็น task ประเภทไหน
- ถ้าเขาถามความคิดเห็น → Discussion → ใส่ opinions ลงไปได้เต็มที่ (อย่างน้อย 2-3 supporting ideas)
- ถ้าเขาให้เรา discuss a particular proposal → Proposal → Discuss แต่ proposal นั้นๆ ว่าเห็นด้วยหรือไม่เห็นด้วย
- ถ้าเขาให้เราเลือกระหว่าง 2 opinions หรือให้ discuss ระหว่าง advantages & disadvantages → Argument → Discuss ทั้งสองด้าน และโยงไปสู่การตัดสินใจ
ย้ำความสำคัญว่า นอกจากอ่านโจทย์ให้ครบแล้ว เราต้องเคลียร์ด้วยว่า task ของมันเป็นคำถามประเภทไหน เพราะจะมีผลต่อการวาง essay structure ถ้าทำขั้นตอนนี้ได้ดี เราจะเขียน essay ได้ง่ายขึ้นแบบฉลุย แต่ถ้าผิดพลาดตรงนี้ขึ้นมาล่ะก็ จะเขียนยาก และอาจผิดไปทั้งแผ่นชนิดที่กว่าจะรู้ตัวก็แก้ไม่ทันเสียแล้ว
